PABST stands for partial bursa side supraspinatus tear. It pairs well with the PASTA lesion which I illustrated in a previous blog post. The exact cause of the bursal sided tear has been studied and is elusive. Earlier, we thought this was just due to mechanical wear and tear. Now, evidence points to a process called apoptosis where some of the cells in the tendon undergo "programmed cell death". Whatever the underlying cause, it can cause pain and weakness in the shoulder.
